A Press Statement concerning the Upcoming MENAFATF Evaluator Training in Kuwait

H.E. Sheikh Salem Abdulaziz Al-Sabah, the Governor of the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) and Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, announced that CBK and the Middle East & North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF), in coordination with both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, are organizing an Evaluator Training Seminar during the period 17 - 21 December 2005 in the State of Kuwait.

H.E. the Governor added that the Evaluator Training Seminar aims at laying the ground for developing qualified experts in MENA countries, who can later provide assistance in carrying out mutual evaluations of these countries in the area of anti money laundering and combating terrorist financing, in accordance with the best practices in this regard and using the common methodology adopted by both the IMF and the World Bank to monitor the adherence of countries to combating money laundering and terrorist financing.

Participating in this Seminar will be a number of experts, from MENA countries, representing financial, legal, and law enforcement sectors, those working in institutions concerned with supervision over the banking and financial sector and other professions in their relevant countries. People from law enforcement and financial investigation will also be participating in the Seminar.

H.E. the Governor and Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, pointed out that hosting this important event signifies the State of Kuwait's commitment and contribution to strengthening anti money laundering and terrorist financing efforts on the local, regional, and international levels. H.E. expounded by indicating the transparency of relevant authorities in Kuwait in this respect, the evaluations of law and regulation in Kuwait carried out by international bodies such as the IMF and FATF, as well as the measures taken by the State to implement international recommendations and practices in this regard.

Finally, H.E. the Governor stated that the State of Kuwait's participants in the Seminar will be from CBK, the Public Prosecution, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and the Public Authority of Customs.
