This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). An initiative by the late Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may Allah have mercy on him, which aimed to strengthen coordination and integration between the member states. In order to document the GCC’s vital role and efforts towards stability and development in the region despite the geopolitical headwinds throughout the last four decades, and to honor the founding leaders and their roles in the Council’s success story, the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) issued a commemorative coin to celebrate this occasion.

The center of the obverse portrays the leaders of GCC countries at the time of GCC establishment in 1981, topped with the number of years since establishment surrounded with the title of the coin in Arabic inscription, the year of establishment and year of issuance. Highlighting the obverse is the GCC’s Slogan "Our Gulf is One, Our People are One". The reverse features the GCC’s logo, which contains a hexagonal shape surrounding the GCC map, with “In the name of Allah, The All-Merciful, The Ever-Merciful” on the top, and the name of Council on the bottom, along with the title in English inscription. The side also bears the official logo of the Central Bank of Kuwait and with the nominal value of the coin.

The coin is made of gold-plated fine silver in line with the world standard specifications: 38.61 mm diameter and 28.28 g. weight. Those willing to acquire the coin may visit the CBK’s Banking Hall by booking an appointment through the “Meta” App, as of Tuesday 25 May 2021.
