CBK Launches “Kuwait Wage Payment System” (KWPS)
The Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) announced today, Monday, 28 September 2026, the launch of “Kuwait Wage Payment System (KWPS)”, one of the strategic projects under phase II of Kuwait National Payment System (KNPS2), which is managed and operated by CBK.
In a press release, the CBK noted that the launch of the KWPS forms part of its strategy to further develop the payment infrastructure, advance digital transformation, and enhance the efficiency of the banking sector, thereby supporting the State’s efforts to establish an advanced national payment system.
The system aims to establish an integrated national platform for processing and monitoring wage transfers for private-sector employees through local banks, thereby enabling wages to be disbursed electronically in a secure and reliable manner. CBK assumes responsibility for the system’s technical and operational management, while the Public Authority for Manpower oversees and monitors the level of compliance by employers with the provisions of KWPS. This, in turn, strengthens integration between the two authorities and achieves the highest levels of efficiency and governance.
Built on the latest payment technologies and aligned with the international standards for electronic data interchange between financial institutions (ISO20022), the system marks a transformative leap in the development of the State’s financial infrastructure, and contributes to enhancing the transparency, efficiency, and speed of wages disbursement through local banks, as well as enabling the electronic tracking of spending transactions. The system also helps reduce manual procedures, improve data quality, and facilitate data sharing among relevant authorities. It also promotes financial inclusion and encourages the use of banking services and electronic payment methods, allows supervisory authorities to conduct real-time monitoring and early detection of non-compliance with wages disbursement, while providing accurate data to support decision-making and the formulation of labor-market policies.
The launch of the system comes as part of CBK’s continued efforts to implement the national roadmap for developing the payments system. Earlier this year the Kuwait Automated Clearing House (KACH) was launched in January 2026, followed by the launch of the Kuwait Dispute Management System (KDMS) in February 2026. KWPS is the third system to be launched under phase II of Kuwait National Payments System Project.
Concluding its statement, CBK affirmed that the KWPS represents a significant addition to the national payment system, and reflects CBK’s pivotal role in leading national financial infrastructure development projects. The system also contributes to advancing a sophisticated national payments framework aligned with leading international standards and best practices, and characterized by efficiency, reliability and flexibility. In turn, it further consolidates the State of Kuwait’s position as an advanced financial center, well positioned to keep pace with evolving global developments across the payments and digital financial services sector.
